How To Measuring For Storm Windows

Measuring for storm windows is extremely important to get the best fit on each window and to insure the highest energy efficiency possible. The first question you have to answer is whether you will use interior or exterior storm windows - each has their advantages and disadvantages that you should know before you pruchase your storm windows.

Measure Each Window

It's important to measure each window individually. Often windows will look the same, but once measured there are subtle size differences. Of course, this doesn't always mean that the storm windows will be available in that exact size, but it will come into play when you install the windows.

Measure The Width

Start by measuring the width of each window opening. Width can be determined by measuring the inside of the molding. Start on one side and move to the other, staying inside the opening. It's important to measure the top, middle and bottom widths. The narrowest measurement is the width to use for storm windows, although if there is more than 1/2" difference it probably means that the frame is in poor shape and should probably be replaced with a full replacement window. Jot down the 3 measurements on a notepad.

Measure The Height

Next, measure the heigth of each window. Height can be easily measured by starting at the sill and measuring to the top molding inside the window. It's important to measure in the middle, left and right and then use the shortest size to determine the right height for the storm window. Again, if there is more than 1/2" difference between the left and right measurements, it probably means that the frame is in poor shape and should probably be replaced with a full replacement window. Jot down theese 3 measurements on a notepad.

Measure Across The Frame

Finally, measure from the top left corner to the bottom left corner. Measure from the top right corner to the bottom left corner and jot down these measurements on your notepad.

Final Notes And Tips

Now you have all of your measurements and you can call up local contractors or can purchase storm windows at a local window store. Remember toaAlways use the smallest measurement as this is what will ensure that the flanges of the storm window will sit inside the exterior trim of the existing windows.
