Storm Window Advantages

Discover the numerous storm window advantages over full replacement windows. Also read our storm window disadvantages pages to see the downsides of installing storm windows outisde of your existing windows.

Much Lower Cost

Storm window cost range from as little as $100 to $200 installed. This is significantly lower than a vinyl replacement (think $300 to $750 installed) and certainly much lower than a wood clad replacement (think $450 to $1200). Let's say you replace 20 windows - the project price for the storm windows would be $3500, while vinyl will be say $9500 and wood clad would be 16,000. That's a lot of money saved. Measuring the long term costs gets much trickier however because of the energy savings. However, this pretty massive cost savings is the primary reason why most homeowners opt to go with storm windows over replacement windows more often than not.

Combine With Insulated Glass

If your existing windows are old and not very energy efficient, then storm windows are going to do very little to improve the overall energy efficiency of your house. A nice mid range vinyl window that is properly installed will significantly improve a home's energy efficiency, which can add up to substantial savings over time. The big question here is whether you are fine with poor energy efficiency and some increase maintenance for a much lower upfront cost. Ideally a homeowner would want to combine the storm window with a window with insulating glass for an improvement in energy efficiency. If the original windows are single glazed, then the storm will have much less of an impact in this area.

Better Window Protection

Adding an exterior storm window adds an extra layer of protection for your existing windows. It's akin to a lens cap for a camera in order to safeguard the lend.

Ideal For Historc Homes

Some historic and older houses have stain glass, true divided lites and/or leaded glass. If you were to take out these originaly windows and add a storm window, you could potentially hurt the overall value of the home. In these cases, adding storm windows is both a cost effective and cost savings measure that preserves the original windows and historic nature of the home (and may be required by city ordinance to keep a historic designation).
