Types Of Storm Windows
There are four types of storm windows, including basement or picture windows, two track sliders, two track and triple track. These include basement or picture windows, two track sliders, two track and triple track options.
Two-Track Storm Windows
Two track storm windows are a popular choice and are comprised of a half screen where the outer pane is glass at the top and screen at the bottom. They do not slide down and up and the inside track then contains a glass pane, which is able to raise to improve interior ventilation. Triple-Track Storm Windows
Triple track storm windows comprise of two window panes with half screen, each on in their own track, enabling each sash to move on its own. This design is popular because it is versatile and enables the homeowners to push both panes to the bottom of the opening, leaving the screens at the top for improved ventilation without worrying that unwelcome bugs will enter the home. The factors to consider when purchasing triple track storm windows include the screen and glass being removable to make cleaning easy and predrilled holes to improve installation. The weather stripping is also important with these options to reduce air infiltration and ideally a stabilizer bar should be included to add strength to the design. Again, these are designed to work with double hung windows.
Two-Track Sliders
The two track sider storm windows are the same as the two track options, but they don't open vertically, they open horizontally. When purchasing these storm windows watch out for ventilation stops which should be adjustable and found on the inside tracks. The glass and screens should be removable for cleaning and there should be predrilled holes, making installation a little bit easier. It is important that the weather tripping is of the highest quality. These storm windows are used on slider windows.
Basement / Picture Storm Windows
The basement storm windows come with one pane, which is similar to a picture window. Thumb latches hold the pane in place. The latches are on the outside so it can be removed easily. Things to look for when purchasing basement storm windows include the glass being removable to make cleaning easy and a built in screen to reduce insects getting into the home when the pane has been removed. These should come with predrilled holes to simplify installation and the weather stripping should be of the highest quality. Ensure the windows come with a stabilizer bar to provide additional strength for the window.
